Speaking the truth is the foundation upon which our character can be flawlessly built, says DR KAITY CAMA

We all have some weaknesses, some faults, some failings. By cultivating our strengths, these weaknesses are automatically eradicated from our persona, unpeeling the skins of failings one by one, gradually but surely.

The foundation of our strengths is Truth. When we are truthful with others we call it honesty, when we are truthful with ourselves, we call it integrity. However, individual truth is often far removed from Universal Truth. Individual truths are the offspring of our upbringing, our education, our exposure to society, to the media and entertainment via books, films and television dramas, as well as exposure to our peer groups where try to “fit in”. For example, if everybody in our peer group has a cell phone or an iPod, then “of course we must also have one”. These things begin at a very early age, almost at a time when the logical mind has not yet developed.

When we do something for which our mother scolds us or disapproves of us, a fear of losing her love begins to grow in us. Children, up to a certain age, are inherently truthful, and resort to lies only when they feel threatened emotionally. Thus begins the “tangled web” of falsehoods, gaining ground even into adulthood. Late at arriving at office? Blame it on the traffic or a punctured tyre! Couldn’t deliver the consignment or assignment as promised? No problem, blame it on the workers or subordinates! Not accepting responsibility is also a part of dishonesty which is not equated solely with financial dealings.

Universal Truth, however, is constant, eternal and unchanging through all ages, through all cultures, eternal and untouched by any stains. I shall call it The Truth, to distinguish it from individual truth. The Truth is Divinity Itself. The entire Universe and all Its creation are based on The Truth. Spirit carries all the magnificent aspects of The Truth, and our soul (soul is a little different from Spirit) comes again and again and yet again with its karmic layers offered to the persona for purposes of being cleansed and freed from its karmic chains.

Why is falsehood such an obstacle in soul growth? Because falsehood of any kind moves in a direction away from the flow of the Universe which is The Truth. The foundation of a noble, good, stable and upright character is Truth. Many, many people say that without speaking occasional lies, business cannot be successfully conducted. My personal experience is that when we walk with Truth, business is not only conducted successfully, it is much more than “successful in any and every meaning of the word. Apart from gaining the respect of others, our own Self-respect rises. The financial gains which follow as a by-product of any work conducted with Truth are “clean”, and they are long-lasting.

Choose the Truth

Financial gains accumulated from falsehood really are a waste – they benefit no one spiritually or even materially. Buy new cars and new houses with money stained from some form or the other of falsehood, and within a very short time these material objects need repair. Use that money for medication, the medication is not effective in the long run. Use that money for educating children, the children have some problem or the other. Marry on the strength of a falsehood, and the marriage breaks up. These are harsh consequences which follow despite the kind rope that the Universe extends to us by way of opportunity after opportunity of changing our “modus operandi”  but we continue along without making connections.

Swimming against the flow of the Universe is not worth it. Neither materially, and most certainly not spiritually. After all, if we consider that when we leave our bodies behind, we take with us as a carry-over for the next incarnation only our character and the talents we have honed for soul growth in this lifetime, does it really make sense to lie about anything? And who are we hiding the truth from? Think about it, who are we trying to hide the truth from, and why? The truth or the lie shows up in our energy field even before we have completed speaking it. Each time we speak an untruth, we move a step away from spirituality.

Speaking the truth as you truly believe it to be is the foundation upon which our character can be flawlessly built. Speaking the truth doesn’t mean that we broadcast to all and sundry about each and every personal aspect of our lives, not does it mean that we go out of our way to tell another, “You know, I have decided to speak only the truth, so I must inform you that the colours of your outfit look horrible on you.”

Walking with The Truth is more profound than that, and for starters, each time we are about to speak an untruth, if we can either keep silent or speak the truth, this will bring us closer to the flow of the Universe. Being in flow with the Universe constantly brings an event which might be said to be miraculous, but is just the natural outcome of speaking the truth always: if ever inadvertently, we say something good, kind and loving, it will come to pass.

Truth is our greatest strength – purity of Truth in thought, word and deed.
