My heart skipped a beat

Nita Agarwal

When my new born covered his eyes

Using his little hands

To escape the harsh bright light maybe

Once again when he looked at me

With lips curled and eyebrows in a frown!

My heart skips a beat

Whenever I see a baby smile at me!

My heart skips a beat

When I see the rising sun

Playing hide-n-seek with the clouds!

My heart skips a beat

When birds do their dance

And flap their wings in joy

My heart skips a beat

When I happen to see the moon

With a little star by its side!

My heart skips a beat

At natural wonders

I see all around!

My heart skipped a beat

When I saw a four-year-old

Washing utensils by the roadside!

My heart skips a beat

When I see a tiny girl

Carrying a heavy pot of water on her head!

My heart skipped a beat

When I saw a half-naked man

Sleeping near the garbage bin!

My heart skipped many beats

When I saw a beggar picking food from the garbage

Accompanied by a dog doing the same!

My heart skips a beat

When I see hope and longing

In eyes of abandoned parents!

My heart skips a beat

Seeing the duality of our existence!

My heart skips a beat too often

Seeing chaos and injustice!

My heart skips so often

I don’t know, for how long….
