ARJUN PEREIRA pauses to reflect on the body’s most vital organ — the heart — on World Heart Day
Every year, on September 29, the world pauses for a moment to reflect on one of our most important organs — the heart. This day, known as World Heart Day, was created by the World Heart Federation to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases, which sadly remain the leading cause of death worldwide. It’s more than just another date on the calendar; it’s a reminder to pay attention to the steady rhythm inside our chest that keeps us alive. It becomes even more relevant as we read the news of several young people in the prime of their youth passing away because of a sudden heart failure.
Why it Matters so Much
The numbers tell a powerful story. Cardiovascular diseases are responsible for roughly one in three deaths across the globe. That’s a staggering figure, but here’s the hopeful part: around 80 per cent of premature heart disease and strokes are actually preventable. With the right choices, we can avoid becoming part of these disturbing statistics. This day is really a call to action for each of us — a nudge to make healthier choices, to spread awareness, and to protect the very engine that keeps us going.
What Puts the Heart at Risk
When we think about what puts our hearts at risk, a few things stand out. Diet, for one, plays a huge role. Too much salt, sugar, or trans fats can gradually harm the cardiovascular system. Add to that, long hours of sitting still, and the risk goes up. Tobacco use and excessive drinking also strain the heart in ways we often don’t realise until much later. Stress and lack of proper sleep quietly chip away at heart health too, and conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity only magnify the danger if left untreated.

Small Changes, Big Impact
The good news is that small, steady changes can really make a difference. Choosing fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats is a step forward every time you sit down to eat. Making movement part of the day — whether in the form of a brisk walk, a game of tennis or badminton, cycling around the neighborhood, or even dancing in your living room — gives the heart exactly the workout it needs. Quitting tobacco is one of the most loving things you can do for your body. And don’t forget the softer side of heart care: laughter, hobbies, meditation, and rest — all matter. Just as important are regular check-ups to keep track of blood pressure, sugar levels, and cholesterol before they become bigger issues.
This Year’s Theme
This year, the theme of World Heart Day is Cardiovascular Health for Every Heart. It’s a reminder that heart health should not be a privilege. Everyone deserves equal access to preventive care, treatment, and education, no matter where they live or what their background may be.
A Promise to Your Heart From Your Soul
Your heart works tirelessly, beating more than 100,000 times a day. On this World Heart Day, maybe we can all promise to give something back — by caring for it in the choices we make. After all, a healthy heart doesn’t just add years to your life; it adds life to your years.
So, this World Heart Day, let’s make a pledge to know more about our hearts and unite in the common purpose of living more happily and taking care of ourselves and those near and dear to us.
